1982 "See You" Tour

Incomplete audience recording
Lineage: unknown taper and equipment -> unknown generation -> Maxell XL II 90 cassette, 1986 - 1987 stock -> Nakamichi Cassette Deck 1 (fresh belts, upgraded capstan motor, playback amplifier capacitors replaced, tape wound & rewound before transferring, azimuth optimized) -> Monoprice heavy-duty RCA to 3.5mm cable -> ASUS Xonar DX sound card -> Adobe Audition CC 2014.2 (32-bit / 96 khz) -> sped up 4.5% (Audition method, "High" precision), automatic phase correction (most accurate settings), hard limited mic bumps and first few distorted seconds of the recording, normalized to -0.1dB and any DC bias removed -> WAV (32/96) -> tracked using Audacity 2.1.0 -> WAV (32/96) tracks -> FLAC 16-bit 44.1khz using FLAC 1.3.1 64-bit (level 8 compression) and foobar2000 v1.3.8 with its Resampler (SoX) component v0.8.3 (best quality), dithering enabled

Cassette tape photos and auCDtectTaskManager log included

Notes: A good sounding audience recording with a generally quiet crowd. This source is much clearer and has less objectionable hiss than the previously circulating lossless version and has frequencies consistently reaching about 11khz, which isn't bad considering the typical recording equipment of the time. There is a fair amount of wow & flutter, but this seems to be innate to the original recording since the previous lossless version also has the same problem. This wow & flutter is what makes certain instruments during songs sound very strange, such as the synth lead during "Tora! Tora! Tora!" and basically any piano-based sounds. There is some light distortion throughout the recording and the bass is pretty boomy. There are also light pops & clicks throughout the recording, which is odd as this recording shouldn't be a vinyl-sourced one; they're probably a fault of my tape copy (perhaps a magnetized capstan on the recording deck), but they do not detract significantly from the recording so I left them untouched. Automatic phase correction fixed the channel balance; the recording is now pretty centred, whereas the left channel was louder than the right on the previous version. This recording was speed corrected to approximately match the BBC 6 Music broadcast of 1982-02-10 London (https://www.depechemode-live.com/wiki/1982-02-10_BBC_Paris_Studio,_London,_England,_UK).

"Shout" is missing the very beginning and there's a glitch a little later in the song shortly after vocals begin which causes a few seconds of music to be lost. There are a couple more glitches near the beginning of "I Sometimes Wish I Was Dead" where it sounds like the taper adjusted his equipment, likely causing a short drop-out. There are other short "bumps" throughout the recording as well. During the beginning of "New Life", the backing tape fails to begin and there is a momentary pause before the song resumes; about one minute of the middle of the song is missing as well. Audience noise between "Just Can't Get Enough" and "What's Your Name?" is missing, and the first few seconds and the very last second of "What's Your Name?" are missing too.

Thanks to Fonzie for providing this tape and Vince & Robert for assisting in shipping the tapes to me. The B-side is mislabelled (it says "1982-02-08 Bridge House, London") and only contains an average sounding copy of the FM broadcast from 1982-02-10 London (https://www.depechemode-live.com/wiki/1982-02-10_BBC_Paris_Studio,_London,_England,_UK), of which better versions are already available on that wiki page.

My friend Ryan Mayer (LilKing22 on DIME) was born on this concert's date. He passed away on July 9, 2014, much too soon. RIP my friend, hoping you're enjoying all the best Depeche Mode recordings you could ever want. "All I wanna do is see you again..."
