I don't either... I find it very depeche-like, maybe somewhat dark but it's a perfect follow up to Ultra. I wouldn't have expected anything else after Ultra.
I could listed to Dead of Night, Shine and I Am You in loop for hours. My only complaint (well, I am a depeche fan, so I have to complain, that's our nature) is that Freelove album version kinda does not fit in. But that was their choice, their decision and their creative work. I can respect that...
I'd better run now coz I'm about to say it's better than Black Celebration Mwahahaha.
I can't wait for that remaster. Along with Ultra it's the most awaited one for me. _________________ Gahan/DM forum |

There are very few songs that I like on this album, and even most of those are only a 6 out of 10. Though the songs contain minimal arrangements (in comparison to the Alan years), my beef is with the musical part of the songwriting (e.g. chord changes and melodies). Even if Exciter had an Alan-type of layered arrangement to it, I still would have a problem with the album as a whole. The only song on Exciter that truly excites me is Shine; it's a shame that it was never given a live and/or remix treatment. As always, Mart's lyrics are pretty much top-notch.
By way of contrast, I enjoy Ultra alot because the songwriting was pretty strong, in spite of the stripped-down arrangements. |

| I don't hate this album, but Depeche have produced much better albums. |

| Exciter is the worst DM album by far. The only songs I ever listen to are Goodnight Lovers, The Dead Of Night and The Sweetest Condition. I hate the album version of Freelove - too long and too much moaning. I do really like the single (Flood) mix though. And Breathe and Comatose - what were they thinking? Comatose is embarassing and Breathe is a laugher. I don't care for I Am You, Shine or Dream On either. Even I Feel Loved seems awkward. I think even DM know Exciter was a stinker as only one song made it on to the Touring The Angel setlist. And even that was taken off for the summer tour. Exciter is why I was very cautious in my emthusiasm when I heard there was a new album coming out. I think Playing The Angel was a huge rebound album - possibly the best DM album ever. A perfect comeback. |

| it's actually, (to me) a "lubby-dubby" album for people in love. but i can understand that, because in order to be able to understand that album very well, i think you have to experience real love.... |

Your're right Shine and When the Body Speaks are so beautiful
When the Body Speaks' intro always makes me close my eyes, breath deep and become all emotional. |

A friend of mine gave me her Exciter album after she cleaned out her music collection. As a relatively new fan, I'd already purchased Violator, Playing The Angel (for 'Precious'), and the Shinoda remix of 'ETS' (which got me into DM in the first place). I was still getting used to the electronic genre, having hailed from the guitar/bass/drums side of the spectrum. I liked a few songs on the aforementioned albums, but I wasn't a fan at that point. Once I got Exciter and gave it a few listens, my overall interest in the group started to grow and expand. In retrospect, it's funny how it was this album which helped me become a serious DM fan.
I can sort of understand where people are coming from. Exciter moves me differently than the other albums, and perhaps the mellow approach just wasn't for everyone. No epic tracks like 'NLMDA' or other catchy, attention-grabbing singles like from the decade before. I'm fortunate to have an ear for a lot of DM's stylistic departures, so my appreciation for their music hardly wanes. _________________ An Increasingly Devoted DM Fan Since 2004. |
